The biggest stories from Time Out Montreal this year took us from announcing the coolest street in the world—hello, rue Wellington!—to the death of Queen Elizabeth II, with our city being ranked 9th best in the world, and a visit from Chef Marcus Samuelsson in between.

1. The death of Queen Elizabeth II

After the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, many Canadians asked what happens next. And will Canadians get September 19 off to mark the event?

2. Rue Wellington in Montreal named coolest street in the world

We quizzed 20,000 urbanites and asked local experts to rank the world’s top streets for food, fun, culture and community, and Montreal’s Rue Wellington came out on top—literally. With one of the city’s best restaurants at one end, and one of the best new restaurants at the other—plus a slew of bars, cult coffee shops and family-friendly spots in between—there’s no questioning a street’s cool factor.

4. Montreal’s best spots according to Chef Marcus Samuelsson

Montreal is home to some of the best restaurants, secret bars and speakeasies, epic nightlife, architecture and things to do in Canada, so it’s easy to see why. The Ethiopian-born Swedish-American celebrity chef is known for his restaurants across the world, including one of Montreal’s best: Marcus, located in downtown’s Four Seasons Hotel Montreal. From a secret bar below the best fried chicken and champagne joint to the best jerk chicken in town, the acclaimed chef shares his top spots across Montreal.

4. Montreal ranked the 9th best city worldwide

We know Montreal is one of the best cities in the world, but now it’s official. According to the Time Out Index 2022’s annual ranking of the world’s greatest cities, Montreal is the 9th best city worldwide. Only two Canadian cities made the list, with Montreal beating out Toronto (who crept in at number 27 out of 53 cities). This comes as a surprise to no one, ever, as we all know that Montreal is better than Toronto.

5. Where to find the best Montreal bagels

Ask anyone (including pop superstar Dua Lipa and her brother) what you need to eat if you want a true taste of Montreal, and you'll be directed to the best bagels in the city. They're right up there at the top of our list of iconic Montreal food alongside the best delis for Montreal smoked meat—followed closely by the best poutine—and they're a cornerstone offering on the best brunch menus while ranking high among the best cheap eats in Montreal. What humbly started with Jewish immigrants bringing hand-rolled, wood-fired rings of sweet, thin, and dense dough in the early 20th century has become world-famous.
