It’s official: Amazon has announced that it's closing all 7 of their warehouses in Quebec.

This decision will eliminate approximately permanent full-time 1,700 jobs in the greater Montreal area, and 250 temporary employees.

With roughly 4.5 million residents in the Montreal metropolitan area, the closures mark a significant reversal from Amazon's recent expansion efforts in the province.

In 2021, the company opened three delivery stations, followed by another last year.

It also operated a small fulfillment center and two package sorting warehouses in Quebec.

Why is Amazon closing warehouses in Quebec?

The e-commerce giant stated that the move would provide additional savings to customers over the long run, and that returning to a third-party delivery model supported by local small businesses—similar to what was in place until 2020—will allow Amazon to provide the same service.

A Canadian union that successfully unionized one warehouse has accused Amazon of closing its sites to fend off organizing efforts in the region, while Amazon denied claims that the announcement is related.
