Are you about to say goodbye to your commuter train?
A cost-savings initiative may be affecting train service in the Greater Montreal area.
According to a document issued by the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM), the commuter train network was assessed in June, 2024.
A report from Radio-Canada indicates that the possibility of shutting down numerous train lines was discussed at a recent board meeting.
The report (dated August 29, 2024) projects that fully closing the lines could result in annual savings of up to $21 million.
Replacing these train lines with buses was also taken into account, but as the second most congested city in Canada, what does that mean for Montreal’s traffic situation?
Which Montreal train lines are at risk for closure?
The three least busy lines to Montreal—Mascouche, Candiac and Mont-Saint-Hilaire—are at risk.
The ARTM is also considering no longer serving some stations on the Vaudreuil-Hudson and Saint-Jérôme lines.
Passengers of the Candiac line would be redirected by bus to Brossard.
And passengers of the Mascouche line would be redirected to the Radisson Metro station.
