Monserrate is the kind of place you've driven past dozens of times but never thought to enter. Maybe it's your parents' favorite restaurant? Or it didn't make the list of buzziest places? Both could be accurate. Still, this 43-year-old establishment commands respect, plus everything that comes from its kitchen is exceptional, even if most dishes are on the heavier side. Standard orders include the Típica Monserrate ($15)—the restaurant's signature platter (bandeja paisa) with ground beef, chicharron, rice, a fried egg and fried sweet plaintains—and a hangover-curing soup, such as tripe and beef. Still hungry? Colombian arequipe (similar to dulce de leche) makes the perfect ending to any meal.
