Mandrake, the showy Asian restaurant from the team behind Kiki on the River and Mokai, gives the people what they want: an Instagrammable setting, a clubby experience and an environment that practically beckons the beautiful people of South Beach to dine. Still, the restaurant isn’t as clichéd as one might think. Sushi is made by a former Nobu chef while the assorted cooked seafood dishes are artfully presented and pack flavor without costing a fortune (a whole tempura fish is just under $50). Plus, Mandrake bucks the uni trend with unctuous noodles mixed with chunks of king crab that are rich and buttery. It’s not the thing you want to eat before going to the upstairs lounge to party, but it is the kind of dish that sets Mandrake apart from the other SoBe scenes.
