Born as a humble food truck in 2016, Caja Caliente grew a fierce following for its reliably delicious and homemade takes on Cuban classics, inspired by owner Monica “Mika” Leon’s own family recipes. Word spread fast after Caja opened its first non-mobile outpost on the outskirts of Wynwood, a breezy and relaxed outdoor patio space where patrons could wash down their perfectly crispy, fried egg-topped pan con lechón or inventive “Cuban tacos” with a cold cerveza. A handful of TV spots and food festival features later, Caja Caliente is bigger than ever at its new Coral Gables location, a 1,500-square-foot “tranquilo y tropical” themed space complete with intriguing new menu items such as gator tacos and arroz con pollo made by Mika’s mom, Lupita.
