Every year, Time Out ranks the coolest neighborhoods around the world: The greatest places for fun, food, culture and community right now. It’s a tall order that takes months of research and interviews to discover the areas that represent the spirit of the greatest cities on the planet. Our neighborhoods have taken on new importance in 2020 and as such, we’re highlighting them a little differently.
Food, drink, nightlife and innovation played a role in our selections, but, for the first time, so did community—the people, organizations and small business owners who banded together to weather 2020’s proverbial storms.
This year’s number one coolest neighborhood in the world is Barcelona’s Esquerra de l’Eixample, a shining example of an area where folks joined forces to spark some joy. Locals took the reins and organized balcony dance parties, painted murals to lift spirits and led initiatives to feed healthcare workers.
In Miami, Wynwood came in at number 26 for reasons that go beyond graffiti murals and street festivals. The city’s epicenter of arts and culture continued to inspire with irreverent street art and digital radio stations that helped keep the party going at home. Wynwood restaurants were among the first to take over city streets for people to safely dine outdoors. It was a showing of support from all avenues and industries.
