Most of the parks in Miami-Dade have reopened, but the number of public green spaces with scenic views is still few. Happily, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is giving us something new and pretty to look at this weekend.
Starting Sunday, May 10, the Coconut Grove mansion is allowing guests to roam its 10-acre, bayfront garden while practicing safe social distancing. Visitors will need to wear face coverings, remain six-feet apart from others and be in groups no larger than 10 people. As an added precaution, the typically narrow paths will become one-way for foot traffic. Bathrooms will be in use but the café will not. If you’ve been outside lately and experienced our record temperatures, you’ll know water should be second to a mask on the list of things you’ll need to bring for your outing.
Admission to the expansive grounds will be a reduced $12 and tickets need to be purchased in advance online. There will be no one at the gate to sell you a last-minute entrance, so plan ahead. Vizcaya will be open Thursday through Monday from 9:30am to 4:30pm. The main estate, the biggest draw for guests, is closed until further notice. But there’s still plenty of waterfront areas to explore and manicured lawns to offer a much-needed distraction for those who need a mental escape.
