While we all continue to support black-owned businesses, there’s one restaurant in particular that we can’t wait to patronize: Red Rooster. The highly anticipated Overtown outpost of chef Marcus Samuelsson’s buzzy Harlem eatery has yet to announce an opening date—but it’s ready to offer customers a taste next weekend.
On Friday, June 19, Red Rooster debuts its adjacent dessert shop/casual concept called the Creamery. Accessible from the street through a separate entrance, the laid-back spot offers guests a preview of what’s to come with an edited menu of signature dishes and over-the-top sundaes—including namesake Marcus’s cornbread, served with honey-butter caramel and blackberry jam. Fried chicken, chicken appetizers (such as the chips and chicks pictured above) and southern-style sides, like macaroni and cheese, complete the savory spread. While food and ice cream are available for takeout and delivery, there are also 10 picnic tables spaced out within the Creamery’s expansive backyard for folks looking to dine in starting Friday.
On Saturday, Samuelsson’s planned a big celebration in honor of Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. dating back to 1865. Everyone is welcome to swing by from noon to 5pm and enjoy bites in the yard, DJ-spun tunes and flowing rosé courtesy of black-owned label La Fête du Rosé. Reservations aren’t accepted at the Creamery but seating will be in compliance with the current restaurant guidelines, meaning only parties of up to four people will be allowed to sit together.
Bummed you can’t share the experience with everyone at home? Bring the party with you: the Creamery serves up complete Sundae Suppers for those looking to enjoy a delicious composed meal at home.
