Devices have been a lifesaver during lockdown, from giving us access to the outside world to allowing us to stream our favorite shows. So what do you do when your eyeballs need a rest from the blue light and your Wi-Fi connection is totally overloaded? You turn to your local library for alternative sources of entertainment.
Starting this week, Miami-Dade County public libraries are offering a solution to strained retinas and routers with curbside pickup of its books and DVDs. Items will need to be reserved ahead of time through the MDPLS online catalog, mobile app, by emailing customer care or calling their nearest branch. And cardholders must wait for a notification before heading to the library to pick up their items. Social-distancing rules will be enforced, so patrons waiting for whatever titillating paperback they just requested must wear face coverings and remain six-feet apart from other folks in line. Staff will also be wearing masks and gloves to handle materials. Plus, facilities will be quarantining returned materials for 48 hours and sanitizing it according to CDC guidelines before checking it back in for someone else to use.
You’ll need a library card to request and check out materials, but folks who don’t currently have one can apply for an e-card, which can be activated and used immediately. Curbside pickup is available across 50 branches from Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 6pm while buildings remain temporarily closed to the public.
Even if you’re overflowing with e-books at the moment, you must admit thumbing through an actual book is kind of nice. Plus, this might be your only opportunity to bypass the pesky Dewey Decimal System altogether.
