Congratulations are in order for Daniella Levine Cava. The District 8 commissioner made history last night as the first woman to be elected mayor of Miami-Dade county, defeating Republican candidate Esteban Bovo with approximately 55-percent of the votes. It’s a poignant victory for Levine Cava who will take office on the 19th amendment’s centennial year.
“Tonight with humility and gratitude I am honored to stand before you as the first female mayor of Miami-Dade County,” she said during last night’s acceptance speed at her campaign headquarters in Wynwood. “Miami-Dade’s glass ceiling has been shattered.”
The 65-year-old former attorney also becomes the county’s first Jewish mayor and, according to the Miami Herald, the first Democrat to hold office in two decades. Levine Cava will take office in two weeks, replacing current term-limited Mayor Carlos Gimenez, who was also just elected to the House of Representatives in Florida’s 26th congressional district.
Her first order of business once in office? Appoint a chief medical officer to oversee COVID-19 in South Florida. Here, here.
