Whether it’s the bus, the metrorail or the metromover, every mode of public transportation in Miami is notoriously terrible. Is it any different on the water? Well, we’re about to find out.
Poseidon Ferry is new on the scene this week, offering folks rides to and from Downtown Miami and South Beach. The commuter ferry service operates daily and takes about 20 minutes to make the trip across Biscayne Bay, which you’d usually cross via the MacArthur, Venetian or Julia Tuttle Causeways. Poseidon Ferry LLC partnered with the county’s Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), and the cities of Miami and Miami Beach, to launch the one-way, hourly rides.
The waterborne service takes commuters from a dock by the James L. Knight Convention Center (400 SE Second Ave) in Downtown to another at the Bentley Bay Marina (520 West Ave, Miami Beach) in South Beach. Both docks are near public parking lots and trolley and Metrobus stops to facilitate the last leg of your journey to and from the mainland.
Rides will be $10 each way, though Florida residents, military, students and other qualifying riders with proper ID can take advantage of discounted $5 tickets. Select weekday service will be just $3, while frequent riders can bundle up with weekly or monthly hopper tickets and save even more. For now, expect Poseidon Ferry to limit the number of passengers to ensure 50-percent capacity and require every person to wear a mask while on board.
Don’t really have a need for commuter ferry service? Ride for pleasure. Poseidon is hosting two special events this month, starting with Sailing with Santa on December 20 and a New Year’s Eve cruise complete with an open bar and unobstructed views of the Downtown holiday light display. Finally, something that doesn’t involve a drive-thru or a drive-by celebration.
