Between managing a farm in Homestead, where he lives, and overseeing two locations of Ghee Indian Kitchen, chef Niven Patel seldom has time to go out. “I have a pretty well-stocked pantry at home, so it’s easier to whip up something than drive all the way to Miami to have a meal,” says Patel. Here is where he goes on a rare day off.

Guilty pleasure

I love tequila. There’s a new place I discovered called Mercado Negro. It’s a little bar inside Tacocraft, and they have a great tequila selection.

Mangia, mangia (“eat”)

I like going to Proof for pasta, and I love their brussels sprouts salad. Besides Indian food, I love Italian; I spent a year in Florence, so it has a really special place in my heart. [Chef/owner] Justin Flit also does a great job, and the potato buns he makes for his burgers are next-level.

Neighborhood spot

My favorite place in Homestead is Knaus Berry Farm. The owners are good friends of mine. I like to go there on a weekday, hang out, have an amazing strawberry shake and eat a couple of cinnamon rolls.
