For a hot sec, it looked like Miami-Dade Public Libraries was one of a tiny handful of vital city services that would remain open to the public during blanket closures aimed at curbing the spread of coronavirus. As of today, that is no longer the case.
All Miami-Dade library branches are now closed. But there is good news! As long as you have an internet connection in your home or on your phone, you currently have the entire library system’s worth of knowledge and entertainment at your fingertips. All you have to do is access it.
From eBooks, audiobooks and digital magazines to movies and music to online learning and tutoring, your Miami-Dade Public Library Services card offers instant, free access to a whole lot of cool stuff—stuff you might even already be paying for! Interested in learning to code? There’s an eBook for that. Want to know more about the last century’s worth of global pandemics? Check out this nifty audiobook, you curious little masochist. Why not use this time to brush up on your Art House classics or indulge in a few lighthearted rom-coms?
This stuff is so good, non‑Miami‑Dade County residents and people who live in Bal Harbour Village, Miami Shores or the Town of Surfside have to pony up $65 a year to join in on the fun. (When it’s safe to occupy public spaces again, your library card also grants you free access to several coveted Miami museums).
So, how exactly do you gain access to this enormous wealth of free content? If you already have a library card, great. We can only assume you are a savvy human who has been taking full advantage of these very chic and exclusive membership benefits.
If you don’t, signing up for your eCard online is relatively painless. You’ll just need your Florida driver’s license or ID number plus a Miami address to create your login and start browsing. And that’s it! You can now begin chipping away at your 2020 reading goal, learn a new skill, binge-watch the Star Trek franchise or consume whatever the heck else you want while in quarantine. The information highway is yours for the pillaging.
