Because 2020 is the year of weird things happening, you won’t be surprised to learn that the only Blue Moon of the last two years will be on Halloween—an event that hasn’t happened since 1944. You also won’t flinch when we tell you that Denny’s is celebrating the celestial anomaly by turning one of its sandwiches blue.
On Saturday, the diner-style restaurant chain is making the sourdough bread on its signature Moons Over My Hammy blue. The sandwich, a ham and scrambled eggs combo with swiss and American cheeses, will only be available on Halloween and sold—you guessed it!—only in Miami. So, why us? The best-selling breakfast dish was sort of named after the city: Its name is a punny riff on the 1935 jazz classic “Moon Over Miami.” As a nod to its namesake, about 20 Denny’s locations in South Florida will carry the sandwich for dine-in Saturday. “This colorful upgrade gave us an opportunity to have some fun and show our guests that anything is possible in 2020,” said John Dillon, chief brand officer for Denny’s.
Blue buns notwithstanding, the Blue Moons Over Miami should taste exactly the same as Moons Over My Hammy. Though, as one curious Twitter fan points out, the way in is not the concern. It’s how it comes out that has some people worried. The verdict is still out but, to echo Mr. Dillon, anything is possible in 2020!
