It looks like there might be hope for your summer vacation on the high seas after all. Miami-based cruise lines Norwegian and Carnival have announced that they are ready to start cruising again in the next few months.
For its part, Carnivals plans to resume its Caribbean itineraries from its ports in Miami, Cape Canaveral and Galveston, Texas, beginning August 1—a week after the CDC’s No Sail Order is set to expire. Eight ships from the company’s flagship line would be the first to set sale, though there’s still no assurance that business will go on as planned. “Any resumption of cruise operations is fully dependent on our continued efforts in cooperation with federal, state, local and international government officials,” stated the company in a Tweet. Voyages on its other ships will likely be canceled through the fall.
Norwegian Cruise Line is preparing for an earlier departure it seems, as they’ve extended their voluntary temporary suspension of voyages only through June 30 and “plan to relaunch cruise operations with embarkations beginning July 1, 2020.” Norwegian’s date, like Carnival’s, is tentative with both organizations keeping close tabs on the changing circumstances. “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as they are available,” said a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line. Royal Caribbean, which is also based in Miami, has not yet set a date for when it’ll resume cruising.
While cruises aren’t as imminent as, say, Memorial Day, there’s still a shot you could find yourself aboard for a July 4th vacay. Maybe don’t give up on your summer bod just yet?
