New vacations await: American Airlines just announced that it will kick off non-stop service from Miami to South Caicos, part of the Turks and Caicos Islands, on March 15. The airline will operate round-trip flights on Wednesdays and Saturdays, effectively becoming the only international route to the local airport, according to Visit Turks and Caicos Islands.

Miami Herald reports that the inaugural trips were supposed to kick off in February but were then delayed because of an issue with airport certifications.

“With certification approval for international commercial service from XSC (airport), we are pleased to offer this exciting route, complementing our portfolio of more than 80 nonstop destinations from MIA to Mexico, the Caribbean and Latin America,” a spokesperson for the airline told USA TODAY in an emailed statement.

As for what to do once you actually get to South Caicos (other than enjoy the beautiful weather, of course), there is a lot to choose from: from snorkeling to kayaking, bone-fishing and more, the majority of activities make use of the beautiful local beaches, which are known to be more rugged than those on the main island of Providenciales.

The new flights from Miami to South Caicos only take about two hours, making the destination an ideal weekend getaway, especially considering the novelty involved in visiting. See you there?
