Look south from downtown Miami and you’ll spot it there on the horizon—a well adorned tower rising up from Coral Gables looking as though it was transported from southern Spain. The Biltmore Hotel has an illustrious history that’s almost a century old. Today, it stands fully renovated, a gleaming example of Florida’s gilded age in the 1920s. Every inch of the place still looks as new as it did when everyone from Al Capone to Franklin D. Roosevelt made it a winter retreat. There are lots of reasons to go today—a storied golf course and a massive swimming pool that was once the world’s largest—but, for many, the simple reason is that it’s iconic, luxurious, and a fine place for a Miami getaway.

Once the world’s largest and grandest swimming pool

When the  271-room hotel opened about a century ago, the Biltmore boasted the world’s largest swimming pool. Spread out over 23,000 square feet, it holds 600,000 gallons of water. That’s more than the aquarium at Miami’s Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science. And while no longer the world’s biggest swimming pool (that goes to a million-gallon pool in Egypt), it’s still a thing of beauty. The pool features a long esplanade running along one of its banks, with greek-style statues sitting in between the pillars. Cabanas with wide-screen TVs and bottle service run up to the edge too, and can be rented for $300 to $700 a day. The lush landscaping includes palms, hibiscus and bougainvillea, keeping rows of chairs feeling secluded even in a pool as big as this. Maybe the best part though? The pool also serves as a reflection pond, doubling the view of the Biltmore’s 315-foot-tall tower, modeled after the Giralda in Seville.

The Biltmore’s deep roster of celebrities

Google photos of celebrities spotted at the Biltmore and you're sure to come across one of former New York governor Al Smith watching golf partner Babe Ruth tee off. Ruth is wearing a pair of plaid knickers with socks as high as if he were on the baseball diamond. Behind the crowd watching Ruth, you can just make out the Biltmore, in its splendor, a temporary home to celebrities regularly for a century now. Among them: the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Ginger Rogers, Judy Garland, Al Capone and presidents including Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Franklin D.  Roosevelt, who even set up a temporary White House in the Biltmore during frequent visits to Miami. And the original lifeguard? Johnny Weissmuller, an Olympic swimmer and later, Hollywood’s most famous Tarzan.

A boom, a bust, a reopening—and maybe a ghost or two

When it opened in 1926, the Biltmore’s $10 million price tag made it one of the most expensive hotel properties anywhere. It was also Florida’s tallest building. Thousands flocked from up and down the east coast to arrive at the opening. Just months after opening, however, a massive hurricane marked the end of Florida’s great land boom. The Army took the place over during World War II and turned it into a hospital, which later became home to the VA and the University of Miami medical school. Abandoned in 1968, it became a playground for neighborhood kids to explore, leaving with ghost stories that are still told today (mostly about seeing gangster Thomas "Fatty" Walsh, who was shot and killed during a party on the 13th floor). Coral Gables spent $55 million restoring the grand 150-acre property, and it reopened in 1987. It has since chalked up tons of accolades, like ending up on Travel + Leisure's list of best Florida golf resorts and Conde Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards.

A spa perched above the city

The Biltmore's spa is as luxurious as you'd expect from a historic hotel perched over all of Miami. It has all of the standard services—fitness center, massages, facials, nails—and also hangover-beating IV treatment for couples. Go on Tuesdays and the $139 Signature Guava Massage or Custom Cleansing Facial comes with a glass of bubbly and complimentary eye treatment.

A very British afternoon tea

The Biltmore's afternoon tea is quite likely one of Miami's most European-style indulgences. Set up in the hotel's grand lobby, the menu includes a range of savory items like malt bread veal with tuna crema, and sweets like mini fruit tarts and blackberry mascarpone profiterole. A harpist sets the tone and tablescapes are full of flowers collected from the nearby garden.

A legendary spot for golfers

Celebrated golf course architect Donald Ross designed the Biltmore's 18-hole course in 1925, and it reopened in 2019 after receiving a full refresh to bring it up to modern standards. It once served as home to The Miami-Biltmore Open—among the richest purses in pro golf—and it still serves as the site for the Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship. Playing a course with views of the Biltmore isn’t the only benefit—golfers say it’s a challenging course with tricky water hazards and more than 80 bunkers.
