The Clay’s location—on the corner of Washington and the café-lined, Euro-style Española Way—is excellent: nightlife is nearby, as are Lincoln Road Mall and the beach. The Mediterranean-style building was once the headquarters of Al Capone’s gambling syndicate and, later, a set for Miami Vice. These days it attracts adventurous nomads. Cut-rate lodgings are basic but clean.
