The flagship boutique of the South Beach Group, the Catalina is fun, trendy and affordable, if a bit rough around the edges. Set in three deco-style buildings on Collins, it’s a sprawling party palace for those who can’t afford the Delano. The Catalina wing boasts a funky white lobby bar with retro touches: shag rug, Eero Aarnio globe chairs and vintage film posters—a playful setting for happy hour (where guests are fed free cocktails from 7pm to 8pm nightly). Bedrooms here are small, minimalist affairs. But next door, in the Dorset wing, the aesthetic is more chic. Bedrooms are dark and slick with brown cushions, damask wallpaper, wall sconces and wood floors. On the roof, there’s a swimming pool. Downstairs, Kung Fu Sushi, Maxine’s 24-hour bistro and Red Bar buzz on weekends. Ask for a quiet room if you don’t like a party (though expect funny looks).
