Time Out says

Housed inside a 100-year-old former industrial building steeped in the rich history of Melbourne’s inner west, the Substation is a not-for-profit multi-arts destination that seeks to celebrate artists from the local community and beyond.

The building was constructed more than a century ago, for the purpose of powering Melbourne’s suburban railway system. After falling into disuse and disrepair for decades from the ’60s, the landmark was eventually restored to become a community arts centre in 2008.

Each year, the Substation presents contemporary works that are experimental, multi-arts in nature and transcendent of traditional forms. Expect international, national and hyper-local presentations, including artist-led initiatives and works in development.
