Art and wine have a long history together, so when Yarra Valley vineyard TarraWarra Estate opened a private art gallery in 2003, the move made perfect sense.
Usually, entry to TarraWarra Museum of Art will set you back $10, but for one weekend you can visit the gallery (and take part in some very creative workshops) for free (though to help manage numbers, you will need to book a ticket).
During your visit during the TarraWarra Museum of Art Open Weekend you'll be able to see its current major exhibition, Looking Glass: Judy Watson and Yhonnie Scarce, which dives into works inspired by earth, water, air and fire through the eyes of two First Nations artists. You can also engage with the exhibition offsite via the Lookin Glass Trail; a self-guided itinerary of the Indigenous history of the Yarra Valley region.
The open weekend will also feature a commissioned work by Melbourne artist Minna Gilligan. Gilligan has created a site-specific work called 'Six Flags', an installation of six full-sized flagpoles flying pennants based off the artist's reflective collages (there are two family sessions and one adults-only session).
The open weekend also features a free printmaking workshop with artist Bronwyn Ward, where guests can decorate their own tote bag using monoprints of ferns, twigs, grass and other natural elements.
A coffee van will be on-site for your caffeine hit, or you can, of course, grab a glass or two of wino from TarraWarra Estate. Picnic hampers can also be reserved from the restaurant (or you can bring your own to enjoy on the grounds).
The TarraWarra Museum of Art Open Weekend is on February 13 and 14.
