It ain’t the rapids of Arizona’s Colorado River, but Victoria’s mountain ranges also offer some world-class whitewater rafting opportunities thanks to Rafting Australia.
Get your adrenaline pumping on the Mitta River, located near the small town of Dartmouth northeast of Mount Buffalo National Park and south of Albury and Wodonga. You can choose from a one-day or two-day run, which takes you around Mitta Mitta River Gorge and its 60 or so rapids. The 19-kilometre rapid descent plummets you down between rock formations as you battle the fury of Mitta Gorge (the water is rated between class 2 and class 4). Naturally, you’ll be surrounded by the beautiful mountain peaks of Alpine National Park as you do it so try not to get too distracted – you’re going to want to concentrate on the task at hand.
Rafting Australia has been operating these trips since the 1980s and they’re experts at navigating these rough waters. To find the biggest rapids, head there between July and December. Otherwise, there are a number of summer adventures to be had on the Lower Mitta River and the Upper Murray River.
