The north bank of the Yarra is going to be brightened up with huge lanterns this April. From Saturday, April 6 to Tuesday, April 9, 8000 square meters of the lower terrace of Birrarung Marr will be illuminated by custom-built lanterns with themes and flooded with market stalls and entertainment for the free Light Up Melbourne festival.
The Light Up Melbourne festival is paying homage to the Chinese Lantern festival. Lanterns are used during festivities in China as they not only symbolise a tradition but are also known to bring joy, hope and happiness to the surroundings. The centrepiece will be a lit up Eternal Dragon symbolising good fortune, strength and nobility.
Over the weekend, there will also be a marketplace selling food from over 40 stalls and even ‘Little Sichuan’ section serving the best of Sichuanese cuisine. Food trucks, cultural performances, amusement games and rides will make for a free fun-packed weekend.
