With our Spidey-Senses tingling at the recent Spider-Man additions to Disney+, we have our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man to thank for Marvel’s unfaltering popularity. And unless you’ve been living in an alternate Multiverse, you’d know the web-slinger is celebrating his 60th anniversary this year. So, what better time to chow down on a NYC-style slice at your local pizzeria? Why pizza, we hear you cry? Because Spider-Man will go down in history as the speediest pizza delivery boy ever.

Created by the inimitable Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, Spider-Man first appeared six decades ago in the pages of the anthology comic book Amazing Fantasy #15. Now Peter Parker, the loveable kid who does whatever a spider can, is part of the biggest movie franchise the world has ever seen. So chuck on your comfiest Spidey suit and watch your favourite movies, now streaming on Disney+.

It was during Tobey Maguire’s delightfully goofy and yearningly romantic tenure in the red and blue suit in Sam Raimi’s 2004 flick Spider-Man 2 – hailed by critics as one of the greatest Super Hero films of all time – that saw Parker delivering pizza. Working at the Big Apple institution Joe’s Pizza, he is given an ultimatum: deliver eight extra-large deep-dish pizzas across 42 crowded Manhattan blocks in only seven and a half minutes. Or you're fired. Ditching his scooter for his trusty webs, Spidey suits up and takes to the skies. He even stops to save a couple of kids along the way.

Whether your web-slinging proclivities lie with Maguire, Andrew Garfield or Tom Holland, it’s time to celebrate Spider-Man’s huge milestone. Here are our favourite New York City-inspired pizza joints slingin’ mouth-watering slices to chow down on in his honour.

Inspired by the beloved Italian-American red sauce restaurants of New York City, Capitano is king when it comes to pizza that’s chewy, crunchy and melty in all the right places. The vibe at this casual but oh-so cool diner is fun and relaxed – aka the ideal environment for scoffing slices with your mates. Order the Double ‘Roni with tomato, pepperoni, scamorza and pecorino and you will not be disappointed. The sourdough base is made using flour from South Australia that has been fermented for 48 hours and baked in a stone-lined electric oven, giving it a blistered and complex crust.

Look for the glowing neon sign just off Smith Street of a caped pig with laser beams shooting from its eyes and you’ve found the appropriately named Lazerpig, Collingwood’s most raucous pizza joint. In case you hadn’t already figured it out, this isn’t the most traditional of restaurants – sure, there’s a red and white tablecloth-clad dining room, but that’s joined by a disco ball and DJ booth. The pizza toppings are equally eccentric, yet weirdly delicious – think lemony-chilli spiked prawns on the Prawn Fraser, and pork and fennel sausage, fior di latte, roast jalapenos and honey on the Ronny J.

From humble beginnings as a hole-in-the-wall pizza kitchen at Heartbreaker to 100-seat trattoria complete with a leafy rooftop terrace, Connie’s Italian Diner is your city go-to for a deep-dish pie. These thick-crusted, rectangular Grandma-style pizzas are next-level good – in particular the Don’t Tell Nonna, which is topped with San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella, prosciutto cotto and (perhaps controversially, hence the name) marinated pineapple and  jalapeño. Whatever your thoughts regarding pineapple on pizza, there’s no denying they belong on this heavenly slab of dough. Wash it all down with a glass of red and thank us for the tip later.

With a name that quite literally translates to ‘pizza my love’, you just know the cheesy slices of goodness at Pizza Meine Liebe are going to be pretty special. This ‘60s-style shop front with rear courtyard in Northcote is renowned for its thin, crispy bases loaded with surprising ingredients like broccoli and braised lamb (yes, we know on paper it shouldn’t work but somehow it does). But if that sounds too outlandish for your taste buds, you’ll find Pizza Meine Liebe does all the old favourites, too – and very well, may we add. The classic margherita is, as the Germans would say, sehr lecker (very delicious).

No list would be complete without including the pizza empire that has spawned multiple sites across the state and even over the border in Sydney. DOC Pizza and Mozzarella is the famous Carlton outpost, a place where thin bases rule and simple toppings are a given. The menu is extensive (there are at least 15 different varieties to choose from), but it’s hard to go past the signature slice: the DOC with San Marzano tomato, mozzarella, buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil. Yum. A word of advice: it does get busy here, so make a booking or be prepared to wait.
