Newstead is small town in Victoria Mt Alexander Shire. It sits in the state's 'golden triangle', one of the richest alluvial gold mining areas in the world. It's about a 90 minute drive north-west of Melbourne and just 15 minutes from Castlemaine. The town has its own primary school, two pubs, a motel, a bed and breakfast, a café and a winery just out of town. The town hosts several events each year including the Newstead Short Story Tattoo and Newstead Live – a music and folk festival.
