You're probably already familiar with street art hotspots Hardware and ACDC lane in the CBD, but did you know that there's an abundance of street art in the beachside city of Frankston? In fact, there's so much vibrancy within the southern city that Frankston’s street art tours have won Best Street Art Tour in Australia for two years running.
To celebrate the thriving street art culture in Frankston, the local council is putting on a huge free festival that includes a Friday night block party, plenty of eclectic live music and free street art walking tours – so you can see these iconic murals yourself.
The Big Picture Fest is a week-long arts and culture festival that takes place from March 18-24 and invites talented street artists from around the globe to paint murals throughout Frankston’s streets and laneways. Some of the artists participating include: Jeks from the US, who is well known for his hyper realistic monochromatic portraits. Also hailing from the US, but born on Aussie soil, is leading female artist Vexta. Other overseas artists participating are street art pioneer Gomad (Netherlands), Peruvian artist resident Bronix, the Bauhaus and Brutalism inspired Ursh (Germany) and graffiti-turned-glitch artist Demsky (Spain).
There's also plenty of homegrown talent to be marvelled at too, with the hyper realistic style of Calum (NSW) and the comic book style of Kitt Bennett (VIC). Don't forget to keep an eye out for the adorable miniature artwork of Tinky, with more than eight hidden works to discover during the festival.
Get your art-fix then boogie the night away at the Friday night block party in Park Lane on March 22. Be captivated by incredible tunes brought to you by local talents like post-punkers Gut Health, the addictively fun Bananagun, indie-rocker Milku, charming indie popstar Tamara and the Dreams and genre-blending DJ Obliveus. There will also be a spectacular art projection to view on the night by Aussie digital artist Fraz the Wizard.
Not only is there great live music to be enjoyed, but there are local wineries and distilleries all around to keep the party going. For a more chilled atmosphere, there's the Sound Lounge Bar to relax in and plenty of food trucks to enjoy a meal too.
This March, venture a little further from the comfort of the CBD and experience a truly captivating festival of colour down south.
