Once the musical is based on the enduringly popular John Carney film of the same name. The two share a soundtrack, and between them they’ve racked up a boatload of awards. In fact, Once is the only Broadway show with music that has won an Academy Award, Grammy Award, Olivier Award and Tony Award – making the score itself close to achieving coveted EGOT status.
Now, the musical known for its achingly beautiful love songs is making a return to Melbourne, where it hasn’t been seen since 2015. That’s right, Darlinghurst Theatre Company is bringing Once back to Melbourne at the Comedy Theatre from May 6 until June 4.
This long-awaited Melbourne season comes off the back of a sold-out Sydney stint and we won’t be surprised if tickets disappear faster than you can say ‘right person, wrong time’.
For the uninitiated, Once is an enchanting tale set on the streets of Dublin. The story follows a struggling Irish busker on the brink of giving up on music and the charming Czech piano player who takes an interest in his compositions.
Once the musical is made all the more moving by its unusual approach to accompaniment. The cast also doubles as the orchestra, playing instruments live on stage. With music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová and a book by Edna Walsh, it’s an emotional experience that will remind you of the uniting power of music.
