Fans of suspenseful stories or Monty Python-style absurdity should mark their calendars, because this famously side-splitting play has elements of both. Just four actors will bring more than 150 uproarious characters to life in The 39 Steps, for a limited two-week season at Prahran’s Chapel Off Chapel this March.
The Tony and Olivier Award-winning comedy ran for an astonishing nine years after opening back in 2006, making it the fifth-longest running play in West End history. Now, Melburnians have the chance to experience the timeless hit from March 8-17, before The 39 Steps sets off on a national regional tour later this year.
So, what’s this madcap tale actually about? The 39 Steps is a parody play based on the novel by John Buchan and the film by Alfred Hitchcock. You can expect classic whodunnit shenanigans, handcuffs, missing fingers and even an onstage plane crash, alongside non-stop guffaws and a dose of old-fashioned film noir romance.
Tickets to this independent production from Hearth Theatre start from $45 and are on sale now via the website.
