A Eurocentric view of the arts makes little geographic sense in Australia, especially when what's happening in our own backyard is so damn exciting. Every three years Melbourne gets an insight into the enormous variety, creativity and innovation of the arts in the Asia-Pacific region with Asia TOPA. The festival runs from January to March 2020 and includes an incredible array of works ranging from a chaotic hypercolour South East Asian street market to a comedic bloodbath where audience members get to play dead. Here are eight unique experiences you can only have at Asia TOPA.

Unique experiences at Asia TOPA

Abbotsford Convent, Feb 20-Mar 1

Abbotsford Convent will be transformed into a hallucinatory street market of a thousand flavours when HuRU-hARa takes over for two weekends over summer. Created by Australian writer-director Thomas Henning, Malaysian theatre-making duo TerryandTheCuz and their collaborators, HuRU-hARa brings together avant-garde artists from across the Nusantara archipelago of South East Asia to create an ever-evolving artwork, a perpetual performance and a non-stop free party. Embrace the chaos!
