Whether you're a fitness fanatic or absolutely dreaded PE in school, playing a social sport is a fantastic way to get active, meet new people and try something new. It's the low-pressure, happy-medium option if you're keen to play without the intensity of a high-stakes competition that's usually associated with team sports.

There are heaps of different sports you can try, like netball, basketball, soccer, futsal and the latest sports craze, pickleball. You don't even need to have a team of pals who are keen to join with you – lots of organisations accept individual registrations. If you're considering giving it a try, we've put together a list of the best places in Melbourne to try out a social sport. Go on, you'll have a ball.
