Time Out says

Lovers of doughnuts and all things mochi, throw your hands up in the air and rejoice! The famous shop responsible for bringing glorious mochi doughnuts to Australia has landed in Melbourne, with a permanent outlet opening in the CBD's Midtown Plaza.

Husband-and-wife duo Dennis and Monique Chan (the "De" and "Mo" of Demochi, respectively) first opened their Sydney store in 2019, after leaving their pharmacist careers to follow sweeter, doughnut-shaped dreams. An inspiring trip to Japan had been the catalyst, where they discovered a vendor deep-frying mochi (a glutinous rice flour dessert that's usually baked or boiled) with delicious results.

The first original mochi doughnut in Australia quickly attracted a flock of raving devotees, and luckily for us, it's now Melbourne's turn to get a taste of the viral treat. Describing their creations as "light crisp doughnuts with the perfect mochi chew", the Demochi team was serious about crafting the perfect recipe to ignite a nationwide obsession.

Intrigued? Drop in and take your pick from a selection that includes all the fan favourites, such as the matcha-glazed mochi doughnut or 'creamium' soft serve with torched meringue. A pastry chef with Messina and Tori's on her resume has also lent her sugar-dusted wizardry to the team, with a Melbourne-exclusive strawberry brulee mascarpone cake and crispy chocolate coffee caramel cake. Okay, we're officially drooling now.

But that's not all – the doughnut shop's legendary DFC (Demochi fried chicken ice cream) has already made a surprise appearance on the menu and is rumoured to be sticking around for a while longer yet. Check it out at Midtown Plaza on your next sweets run.

Love a sweet treat? Here's our round-up of Melbourne's best patisseries and we've also got a guide to the city's best chocolate shops, too.
