The Old Castlemaine Gaol, built in 1861, is home to a pilates studio, walking tours and, as of the latter quarter of 2014, the Governor’s Café. This joint is run by one of the local families that is part of the consortium that purchased the gaol – with the view to it being a venue for the community.
The café itself is exceedingly kid-friendly, with a painting and playroom, plus a gallery for the adults, six-inch high home-baked cakes, lots of outdoor tables among the veggie patches, and the best views in town of the surrounding countryside. Sound a tad too healthy? You can also acquaint yourself with a Prisoner's Pimms.
