Melbourne might have changed dramatically since the gold rush era, but inside the Bank on Collins time has barely passed at all. Many of the buildings original features (like the wallpaper depicting JP Morgan as a bull) still exist from the building’s early days at the turn of the 20th century.
The backdrop might be grandiose, but dishes at the Bank on Collins aren’t excessive. It would be better to describe them as modern, sophisticated takes on classic meals. It’s the kind of place where you can start with oysters, but also order a beefy burger and fries combo.
With such a broad culinary appeal (and excellent location) the Bank on Collins has become a favourite for work lunches, functions, lazy weekend breakfasts and end-of-week drinks. Plus there are special offers on most days: Thursdays for example mean $15 Black Angus steaks and on Tuesday you can get a sample platter and bottle of wine for $69.
Long day? Happy hour at the Bank on Collins runs from 5-7pm Monday to Wednesday and for four hours Thursday to Friday (5-7pm and 8-10pm). On Saturday you can also get $12 cocktails from 5pm – for something fruit try their Collins Street Swizzle where Kraken spiced rum mixes with Appleton Reserve, fresh orange, lemon and pineapple, grenadine syrup and bitters.
