The modern Asian wave continues to sweep through the south-eastern suburbs, with Rock Sugar arriving at South Yarra with a Thai menu that combines traditional flavours with 'very now' cooking methods like smoking guns and sous vides.
Heading the kitchen at Rock Sugar is Kam McManamey (Brotherambo, Bang Pop), while Simon Tammesild (Mr Miyagi) leads front of house service. The team, including owner Nikon Souphan, has their work cut out for them especially with modern Thai stalwarts Chin Chin and Cookie still very much leading the pack. The Rock Sugar menu is dominated by share menus which include dishes like the sour orange curry, pork belly jungle curry, and Flinders island lamb neck spring rolls with massaman coconut cream.
The bubble cup tropical cocktails also deserve a look in, and will no doubt be a popular fixture in the warmer months.
