Calling all cheese enthusiasts, this one’s for you! Located in the Dairy Hall of the Queen Victoria Market, Ripe is a wonderland specialising in Australian-made cheeses.
There are more than 50 varieties on offer – including parmesan, blue and Brie – and more than half are sourced from cheesemakers right here in Victoria, while the rest come from neighbouring states. Expect award-winning cheeses from big-name makers like Berry’s Creek and Holy Goat alongside offerings from emerging producers like Long Paddock Cheese and Stone and Crow. Oh, and Ripe also stock crackers and condiments, because no good cheese board is complete without these tasty extras.
Owner and cheesemonger Hakim Halim is the lactose intolerant mastermind behind this boutique, and established the business to ensure cheese continues to be made from Australian milk, and to support the local dairy industry and small, family-owned cheesemakers.
But being purveyors of fine cheese isn’t the only thing Ripe is renowned for. Halim’s now-famous triple-cheese toastie – an oozing, gooey sambo that literally drips with melted goodness – has developed a cult-like following, with patrons more than willing to line up for a bite. Be sure to keep an eye out for exclusive toastie specials, too, with new flavours created quarterly to reflect what produce is in season.
Ripe also hosts Cheese Talks – a virtual masterclass featuring a local cheesemonger, and Cheese Walks – an IRL tour of Victoria’s cheesemaking regions. And if that wasn’t enough to curb your cravings, you can even engage the services of Halim himself, and throw a cheese-themed soirée complete with guided tasting session at your home or venue of choice.
You’ll find Ripe at Shop 41/42 in the Queen Victoria Market’s Dairy Hall. Alternatively, head to the website for more information on this cheesy oasis.
