Prior to Mukka's arrival on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy's choice of Indian restaurants tended towards the North Indian style, with long menus offering crowd favourites like butter chicken and palak paneer to the spicy rogan josh. There's nothing wrong with this, but it does mean that Mukka's arrival earlier this year brought along with it new flavours to this side of town.
Highlights include the dosa, which are a little smaller and a few dollars dearer than the ones you might have come across in Footscray's Dosa Hut, but the crispy edges, coconut chutney and spicy dhal more than makes up for the lack of size with flavour.
The slow cooked goat curry, like the menu mentions, makes it feel like it's Eid al-Adha (Muslim festival of sacrifice) all year around. Slow-cooked for a minimum of four hours, the fragrant goat falls apart with the touch of a fork, and the tomato-based sauce warrants mandatory scooping with some fresh garlic naan bread.
The small space would feel a lot tighter than it is if not for the DIY decor, which gives the space a homey feel. There's a lot of hand-stencilled paintwork, a colourful mural, and plenty of indoor greenery that livens up the space. If you're from the neighbourhood, lucky you. If not, you'll probably want to keep coming back, Mukka is the kind of Indian joint you'll wish was your local.
