Brisbane doughnut shop Doughnut Time has been brewing up a sugar-coated storm since their first outlet in Fortitude Valley opened and they've been sweeping across the eastern coast throughout Brisbane, the Gold Coast and then Sydney. The doughnut chain's Melbourne outlets were next up, with pop-ups first opening at Topshop Emporium and Topshop on Chapel Street.
Doughnut Time's first permanent Melbourne outlet is located on the busy Degraves Street strip in the CBD, and the pint-sized shop is pumping out technicoloured doughies by the dozen, as well as freakshakes (topped with a doughnut, of course). Expect numbers like the 'Ferrero No Share', the Tim-Tam-topped Cate Blanchett, the blue glazed 'Cookie Monster', and the Nutella-stuffed 'Love at First Sight'. A rotating gluten free and vegan option will be appear on the menu each week.
Doughnut Time's Melbourne outlets operate much like the Brisbane branches, as small kiosks selling ready-made doughnuts glazed and filled on location. A central kitchen based in Richmond will be doing much of the preparation before doughnuts are transported to the kiosks.
The question is, have we reached peak doughnut? We've already got Doughboys Doughnuts, Shortstop, All Day Donuts and Donut Shop. It's tempting to say that Melbourne might be fast approaching a fatigue for these sweet treats, but judging by the initial lines coming out of Doughnut Time's first Melbourne, there's probably some room for this Brisbane import.
