*Connie's Italian Diner is closing in its current location on Saturday 27 May 2023. Long-time fans needn't fret however. Michael and Zara Madrusan, owners of Connie's, are currently looking for a new location for the beloved venue. In the meantime, Connie's famed 'grandma pies' will be available downtairs at the pair's rock n' roll bar Heartbreaker. Watch this space for more details. The following review was written in May 2022.
It’s a ‘famiglia affair’ at Connie’s Italian Diner, where Michael Madrusan generously sets out to share nostalgic memories of his beloved nonna Connie through food, drinks and good times. Michael and Zara Madrusan of Made in the Shade Group (responsible for an impressive hospitality portfolio with The Everleigh and Bar Margaux) are expanding what was originally a hole-in-the-wall pizza joint within Heartbreaker into a full-blown diner upstairs at the same 234B Russell Street venue.
Michael says Connie’s is grounded “in a love of traditional home cooking and a feel-good, warm and welcoming atmosphere”. The inspiration? His upbringing, “growing up in an Italian family where generosity and food is what brings everyone together,” he says. And Connie’s aims to offer something for everyone: early evening dining for families, a rooftop terrazza with views of CBD rooftops for drinks and snacks, and even a late night dance floor.
Head chef Matteo D’Elia (with Michelin starred-restaurant experience under his belt) has worked closely with Michael to develop a considered menu which pays tribute to their respective Italian heritages. Expect familiar favourites such as spaghettini alle vongole and veal tonnato, with a few fun additions such as Bad Nonna’s Lasagne and the Tirami-Sundae. The key player on the menu is of course Connie’s famous, square, deep-pan, Grandma-style pizza. The drinks on offer have also been carefully curated, playing “into the fun that is Connie’s while also having the credentials of a great bar”, says Michael.
And because sometimes clichés are good for the soul, expect red and white chequered tablecloths, vinyl banquettes, black and white photos of pop culture icons and the comforting yet chaotic atmosphere of a Nonna’s generous kitchen.
