Melbourne is blessed with an abundance of excellent watering holes, and though some of them may be hidden in the unlikeliest of places – behind a wardrobe, underneath a laneway or even atop a hotel – the best of them don't go unnoticed. In news just in, our very own Caretaker's Cottage, which is sequestered in a heritage bluestone cottage in the CBD, has won a major award from the World's 50 Best Bars Academy: the Mitcher's Art of Hospitality Award. Congrats, legends! The highly coveted accolade recognises the vital role of outstanding hospitality in the bar experience, with the winner chosen by a panel of more than 700 anonymous industry experts, consultants and bartenders from around the globe.

Since its opening in 2022, Caretaker’s Cottage has quickly established itself as a favourite among locals and visitors alike. It's hard not to love the space's warm and inviting atmosphere, tasteful yet cosy decor, and masterfully crafted drinks, which is why it even won our Best Casual Drinking Venue in the 2022 Time Out Food & Drink Awards. Founders Rob Libecans, Ryan Noreiks and Matt Stirling bring a wealth of experience from some of the world’s top bars to create an experience that fuses world-class cocktail expertise with the familiarity of a neighbourhood pub.

A standout feature of Caretaker’s Cottage is its unique DJ booth integrated into the bar, which boasts a high-quality record player and a thoughtfully curated selection of vinyl records. The bar's menu showcases a mix of classic drinks and innovative creations, alongside a rotating milk punch — a nod to 18th-century English pub traditions. It's even said to have the best pint of Guinness of Melbourne!

“Since opening just a couple of years ago, Caretaker’s Cottage has quickly established itself as one of the best bars in the world, entering the list at No.23 last year,” says Emma Sleight, head of content for the World’s 50 Best Bars.

“A firm favourite amongst industry peers and guests, the bar continues to exemplify the true meaning of hospitality. While the drinks themselves are second to none, the authentically warm, laid-back atmosphere provides a home away from home for guests, creating an unrivalled and utterly memorable drinking experience. This is a very well-deserved win, and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to the entire Caretaker Cottage team.”

Founders and owners Rob Libecans, Ryan Noreiks and Matt Stirling called it "the greatest honour".

“The Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award encompasses everything we strive for, and we are stoked to be recognised this year,” they said. Our hardworking staff believe in our vision and have helped carve our idea of 'modern hospitality' into the bluestone. We’re so proud to have created a fun and inclusive environment that guests enjoy as much as we do. We can’t wait to share the news with everyone, as this award wouldn’t have been possible without our community.”

The Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award will be presented at a live ceremony in Madrid on October 22, coinciding with the announcement of the World’s 50 Best Bars 2024. If you're keen to tune in online and join the celebration, the event will be streamed live on the Facebook page and YouTube channel.
