If you're planning on travelling to Tasmania this year, you might want to consider skipping flights in favour of the ferry. The Spirit of Tasmania has announced that cars and motorcycles can travel on the ferry for free this autumn, as part of the Bass Strait Passenger Vehicle Equalisation Scheme expansion. You still need to pay for you, though.

From March 1 to June 30 2021, travellers catching the Spirit of Tasmania can bring their car, motorcycle or push bike for free, while those wanting to bring a caravan or campervan will receive a discounted "equivalent to that of a standard vehicle fare". What's more,  the offer applies both ways, meaning Tasmanians wanting to visit the mainland can bring their vehicles for free as well.

Keep in mind the offer only applies to bookings made from January 14, and for travel between March 1 and June 30 2021. The scheme is also capped at $6 million – so the offer may expire prior to June 30 if all allocated tickets are snapped up before then. For more info on the offer, head to Spirit of Tasmania's website
