The facade of Flinders Street Station is arguably the most iconic view in Melbourne, but if you look up at the beautiful heritage building in the next few days, you may notice that something is off.

The landmark clock that serves as the station's crest has officially stopped, for the longest period of time in living memory since it was built back in 1907.

The clock hasn't been ticking since Monday, and Metro Trains have confirmed it will be inoperative for a full week, with plans for it to resume telling the time on Monday, November 25.

During a routine check, it was discovered that a crucial mechanism that keeps the clock functioning was in need of maintenance due to some wear and tear, which makes sense when you consider it's 117 years old.

Metro Trains made the call to switch the clock off so it could be fixed, setting the time permanently to 12:00 for the next few days.

An expert maintainer will be carrying out the repair work on the clock, which is actually the largest clock in Victoria.

It's been a tumultuous few months for the Flinders Street clock, which was also sprayed with mysterious graffiti earlier this year.

If you happen to glance up at the clock before it's back in action, don't be alarmed – you're not somehow suddenly running late.
