Discussions on the different tastes of drinking water can quickly turn into heated debates – everyone has their own opinion on what tastes best, usually based on where they're from and what they're used to. But anyone who has access to clean, drinkable running water should count themselves lucky – it’s not a luxury afforded to the whole world, after all.
The flavour of tap water depends on where the water comes from and how it’s treated. In some regions, water from the tap is clear and crisp, while in others you might notice a chalky taste due to higher calcium levels.
So, to decide once and for all, travel insurance providers AllClear have analysed almost 2,000 tap water-related posts on Reddit to uncover the locations across the world that have the best tasting tap water, and their findings have just been published.
According to the study, the Oceania region didn't receive as much praise as other parts of the world, but specific locations in Australia and New Zealand were highlighted frequently. Melbourne was the top place in Australia, with some passionate Redditors claiming it was "the best in the world". We're obviously biased, but we definitely agree. Australia as a whole country earned acclaim for its tap water quality, with Sydney also getting plenty of shout outs, and Christchurch was the other city in Oceania that was a frontrunner for tastiness.
In Europe, Scotland reigns supreme. It’s not only the most-mentioned location on the continent but also the second-most in the world, with Redditors awarding particular praise to water from the nation’s Highlands and lochs. Norway and Iceland also get a fair few mentions, as do Alpine countries Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
Over in the US, the city with the most mentions is New York City, thanks to its supply from the lush green mountain region of the Catskills. Other countries across the globe that earned praise were Armenia, Aruba, Japan, Nepal and the Netherlands. You can read more about all the locations with the tastiest drinking water here.
