You know Southbank, now we introduce you to Northbank. It’s technically the opposite side of the Yarra to Southbank, but until recently, many people (even us!) didn’t know it was called that. One thing that could put Northbank on a map is a new hotel development that’s headed its way.

American hotel group SH Hotels & Resorts is set to open a new 280-room hotel as part of a massive $450 million Seafarers’ development. The Seafarers site is situated on the Yarra River and includes the old Goods Shed 5 that sits near the Wurundjeri Way bridge. The historic shed is set to be repurposed into a new waterfront precinct that will include a riverside park and the country’s first 1 Hotel.

Project developer Riverlee is building the site, which is set to include apartments, a function centre and a bunch of bars and restaurants.

The hotel, which follows in the footsteps of three successful American 1 Hotel outposts, will include a state-of-the-art wellness centre, a 1,000-seat function centre and a lobby bar. The hotel is also going to be surrounded by a 3,500-square-metre public park.

The hotel and precinct are set to open in 2022.

In the meantime, check out some of Melbourne's best-looking hotels.

ICYMI one of the best restaurants in the world is opening in Melbourne.
