This picturesque chalet is our very own slice of the Swiss Alps

While Victoria doesn't quite have the same glamourous snow culture of Europe, that doesn't mean we can't enjoy the grandeur of a picturesque mountain chalet. In fact, once upon a time (many years ago) our very own snow chalet thrived. But even those who avidly partake in each snow season might not know this, as it's been closed to the public for almost 20 years. But soon, the building colloquially known as the Grande Old Dame of Victoria's alpine region is set to make a long-awaited return.

Mount Buffalo Chalet will reopen very soon, with a new lease on life. The 114-year-old structure was the largest timber accommodation building in Australia, but its reincarnation will see it initially serve as an education centre. Belgravia Outdoor Education will run experiential learning programs at the heritage-listed site, mainly for groups of school students, but it'll also be open to the public with a new café for visitors. In the future, the accommodation will reopen, so people can have the full chalet experience.

Built back in 1910, the chalet was Australia's first ski resort and remains one of the biggest chalet complexes in the country. It thrived in the early to mid 1900s, hosting 162 guests a day on average in the '50s. But it closed in 2007 and lay dormant until repairs began in 2017. Since then, the government has spent almost $8 million to bring it back to life.

The plan is for the chalet to open its doors to the public in early 2025. And the site is certainly worth a visit, not only for the historical significance, but also because of the beautiful surrounds – with mountain ranges, gorges, waterfalls and more that are stunning in both snow or sunshine.
