Whether your eardrums prefer exploring the wonders of the cosmos or being immersed in a world of star-crossed lovers, classical music has the ability to transport you across space and time.
And now that the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) has dropped its program for 2024, you can start to fill next year’s calendar with events that feature moving soundscapes and works inspired by landmark literature.
From marking International Women’s Day with a tribute to Olivia Newton-John to celebrating the Year of the Dragon with superstar Chinese soprano Hui He, the MSO has curated a spectacular season that will showcase 2024's overarching theme: Many Stories, One MSO.
The program will feature 12 premieres, 17 MSO debuts and 14 artists giving an exclusive performance. As well as celebrating the likes of The Lion King, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and Romeo and Juliet through the theme of Great Stories, other key concepts for 2024 include: Australian Music and First Nations Artists, Women in Music, East meets West, Mahler and Dvorak Symphony Cycles and Chorus Concerts.
Over at Hamer Hall, the MSO will host two special festivals. Between April 2-6, the Baroque Festival will explore the world of Bach, Vivaldi and Handel with Baroque expert Erin Helyard and soprano Samatha Clarke. The festival will culminate with a performance with choral conductor Stephen Layon, who will lead a 300th-anniversary performance of Bach’s ‘St John Passion’.
More of a Beethoven fan? Between November 19-30, the Beethoven Festival will showcase the vast range of the German composer's symphonic output in a stunning fornight of music that will cover all nine symphonies.
