The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) has a penchant for bridging the gap between the worlds of classical and pop music, and this summer the Sidney Myer Music Bowl will come to life with a show that builds on that tradition. On Saturday, December 9 a squad of Australia’s most exciting voices will assemble for a tribute concert to George Michael, one of the most-loved pop stars of a generation. Add in the glorious backing of the MSO and you’ve got yourself a sonic experience that’s sure to make an impact.
George Michael sold more than 100 million records globally, across his remarkable back catalogue spanning pop, soul and disco. Between his time as one half of the ultra-successful ‘80s pop duo Wham! and his enduring fame as a solo artist, Michael has amassed countless fans across the globe.
Now, for one night only, Aussie stars will gather together with the MSO for an impressive 30 song bill celebrating Michael’s legacy and showcasing his greatest hits including ‘Careless Whisper’, ‘Faith’, ‘Father Figure’ and ‘Freedom’.
If that’s not enough to get you sliding on your dancing shoes, wait until you hear the artist line-up. The Sidney Myer Music Bowl stage will be graced by drag queen and musical artist Courtney Act, rock, pop and music theatre diva Natalie Basssingthwaighte and multi-hyphenate performer David Campbell. Highly respected Indigenous singer-songwriter Emma Donovan will also lend her voice to Michael’s songs, as will pop sensation Brendan Maclean, alongside many more.
The MSO recommends you bring a picnic rug or floor seating for those moments that you’re not up and dancing – just make sure your chairs are no higher than 20cm off the ground. Tickets for George Michael: Freedom are on sale now and you can get yours here.
