What happens when you fuse the musical wires of Japanese living legends like Cornelius and Shintaro Sakamoto? Well, you get a free-flowing current of jazz, dub, krautrock, disco and R'n'B that leaves your eardrums electrically charged.
As part of Rising, singer-songwriter Shintaro Sakamoto will join forces with Cornelius for a rare appearance. Joined in support by Honey 2 Honey, the Japanese musicians will perform at the Forum on June 16.
After spending the '90s and '00s making psychedelic rock, garage and electronica in the Tokyo-dominating band Yura Yura Teikoku, Shintaro Sakamoto went solo to pursue a softer, groovier sound and start up his own record label.
Meanwhile, Keigo Oyamada's (also known as Cornelius) first claim to fame was as a member of the pop duo Flipper’s Guitar, one of the main groups of the Tokyo Shibuya-kei scene. After donning his ‘Cornelius’ moniker, the musician embarked on a successful solo career, releasing records ranging from breezy bossa nova to bouncy indie pop – with the odd bird-chirp field recording. You can expect his live shows to be just as eclectic.
