Legendary jazz musician Wynton Marsalis composed All Rise, a series of 12 movements for big band, gospel choir and symphony orchestra, back in 1999. This genre-spanning monster work marked the new millennium by chronicling humanity’s enduring ascendence.
Now more than two decades later, Melbourne audiences will have the opportunity to hear the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra collaborate to bring All Rise to life once more, alongside Wynton Marsalis himself on trumpet.
On Friday, August 25 and Saturday, August 26, melodies drawing from the traditions of jazz, classical, blues and Indigenous music from around the world will stream through Hamer Hall at Arts Centre Melbourne.
Marsalis is the name behind the first jazz composition to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music and the only musician to win a grammy in two categories (jazz and classical) in the same year.
The 12 movements of All Rise will ebb and flow towards a grand choral crescendo over around two hours. Tickets range between $75 - $135 and you can get yours online here.
