Things are going pretty well for Geraldine Hickey. The 3RRR breakfast host is engaged to the love of her life, though last year's unpleasantness shelved the wedding plans for the moment. She's written this show about that proposal, complete with a completely adorable video montage of the two of them adventuring around the world.
They say that comedy is tragedy plus time. But what if there's no tragedy? What if everything is going great? Can you make a comedy show about how much you love your wife to be, a 40th birthday party that went very well, and the travails of a gorgeous engagement ring en route to your girlfriend's third finger?
You can if you're as skilled a comedian as Hickey. She is charming and utterly delightful, telling sweet stories of love with very few hiccups along the way. She has complete audience buy-in from the start, commanding attention and adoration from the first moment she walked on stage. In fact, at the performance we saw, a fan left chocolate Easter eggs on stage for her before she came on. That's what a reputation for gentle, kind comedy gets you. No one gives Joel Creasey Easter eggs.
The show is funny all the way through, but it's more constant chuckles than belly laughs. Her observational style and deadpan delivery are relatable and unconfrontational. The early timeslot fits this kind of show, made clear when Hickey asked her audience how many of them would be going home straight afterwards, to rapturous applause. If you want to be tucked up in bed by 9pm after an hour of gentle fun, this is the show for you.
